Reduce and Prevent Potential EPA Fines
EPA Compliance
The EPA has been stepping up their routine compliance inspections, resulting in many companies being imposed fines for poor or inadequate compliance with EPA regulations. Recently, Downer EDI Mining out of its Mount Thorley facility, was fined $15,000 after poor maintenance led to a diesel leak. EPA officers found that a diesel bund valve was buried in the soil causing a small amount of diesel to leak out. They determined that it was likely that a small number of spills had occurred as a result. The EPA officers also found that there was poor chemical storage, which can lead to potential soil contamination as well as inadequate stormwater diversions.
The EPA’s work is twofold in situations such as this. First, assessing the fines to highlight areas that are lacking proper standards for the environment and secondly, working with the company to improve its future environmental outcomes to hopefully prevent future environmental concerns.
Spill Prevention
Thor Spill and Containment offers many solutions to both prevent and remediate spills. Instead of burying the valve under soil, a preventative measure would be to install the valve above ground with a spill containment berm. This would allow for easier maintenance as well as catching leaks before they are released into the environment. Our spill berms come in different variations from foam wall to collapsible with many standard sizes and even custom sizes.
Stormwater Diversion
Stormwater runoff is a leading cause of water pollution, making stormwater diversions an integral part of protecting the environment. Our advanced catch basin filter captures multiple pollutants by using different filter media, allowing the user to customize the filters according to their needs. The filters are able to remove hydrocarbons, heavy metals, sediments and other organics from stormwater and industrial runoff. This is an excellent post-construction control for drains that are more susceptible to large concentrations of contaminants. Our HydroKleen catch basin has been verified by the EPA’s Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) program, which identifies the performance of innovative technologies that have the potential to improve the protection of human health and the environment.
Proper spill containment and stormwater diversions are two measures that companies can take to prevent potential fines from the EPA. Thor Spill and Containment offers numerous products and solutions to help make your company safer for your workers and the environment.
